Choosing The Right Jewellery For Your Face Type

Faces are the focal point upon which beauty and appearance are built. Choosing the right jewellery for your facial type can dramatically influence the look.

The lines of jewellery, just as in clothing, direct the eye of the viewer to visually alter perceived appearance of the wearer. Determine your basic facial shape by tying your hair back from your face and use a bar of soap to trace the outline of your reflection in a mirror. The outline should resemble one of the four most common facial shapes.

Once you are aware of your basic facial shape it is easy to choose the right accessories.

The Oval Face

A classic beauty in Victorian times had an angular heart shaped face. Fashion in North America today favours the oval face. These women will find the most options for flattering jewellery as almost every shape works. For this face shape, the key factor to keep in mind is to choose jewellery appropriately proportioned to height and build.

A common mistake made by larger women is to opt for tiny studs or small pendants to try to de-emphasize their size, but it actually has the opposite effect. To look right accessories must be in sync with your body type.

The Square Face

Defined by an angular jawline and a face length that is about equal to the width, the objective in accessorizing the square face is to soften and elongate the features. Choose jewelry that is round, oval or soft-edged. Avoid geometrical designs and look for earrings that are longer than they are wide as well as those with strong vertical lines such as drop earrings.

Avoid designs with horizontal lines as these items will add width to an already wide face. Favour neckpieces ending in a “V” that are long to medium lengths. Try tying a knot on the end of a strand of pearls to create a sharper focal point.

The Round Face

Easily recognized by its softly curved cheekbones and jawline, the objective is elongate this face type and make it appear more oval. Choose earrings with strong vertical lines like drop earrings and long geometrics that add length and shape.

Jewellery that adds width or repeats the roundness of cheekbones and jawline should be avoided. Emphasize the cheekbones by selecting designs with distinct angles and linear direction.

Chokers should be avoided. Instead choose longer chains and neckpieces ending in a “V” to make the face appear more slender.
The Heart Shaped Face

In Victorian times this facial type was considered the face of refinement, today an oval face is preferred so the objective is to soften the chin of the heart shaped face and make it appear more oval.

Earrings and neckpiece must visually add width to the lower half of the face and designs with strong horizontal lines will help it appear more oval.

Choose slightly oversized earrings to give mores substance to the face and choker length neck pieces that will shorten the face and add width.

Avoid button earrings or studs that can make the face appear frail or long narrow earrings and “V” neckpieces that will not enhance the beauty of this facial type.

Whether a woman’s facial shape is oval, round, square or heart-shaped; jewellery looks best when it harmonizes with your particular facial shape.
